July 2012: Site-specific concerts and recordings with Davide Barbarino and Gandolfo Pagano in Sicily. Pantalica, in the province of Syracuse. A deep gorge. But also a city of tombs: cubes and cuboids of air, empty space carved out of solid rock. Hundreds of them. Like Rachel Whiteread's negative house, seeming to invert the relationship of solid to void. But over and over. Wherever you look.
This begins thirteen centuries B.C. The turn of bronze to iron. Some are used as dwellings later. Byzantine churches, even. Positioning ourselves eventually above the river on a grassy slope opposite a giant concavity in the opposite wall of the gorge. Sensing a kind of echo, a special acoustic. The special acoustic of the rocks, the shapes, and the special acoustic shape of the grass, the birds. The water in the gorge, the wind. Later going down for a swim in a series of pools. Fortunately we did not know that the river Anapo is the home of a monster snake that hypnotises and then swallows whole men, donkeys, sheep and goats. For us the pools were blameless.
Getting here was a process. We three with our different sensibilities. Gandolfo, the man with the contact. The contact being the Archaeological Director of the Pantalica site, generous with his hospitality and knowledge, but inevitably dissipating our focus. Davide, anxious that the needs of pure art prevail over all else: deeply in Matteo Meschari's “landscape mind” theory. Me winging it whilst pretending not to.
The distances. Wanting to record the instruments but the place, wanting to record the sounds in the place. Wanting to record the sounds made listening to the place. The sounds made listening to the sounds made listening to the place. Finally Gandolfo's guitar close to the mic, the two horns way apart. The art of imbalance.
