I believe that from the moment we choose to be artists, we in-vest ourselves and take on our peculiar position in the world. At the precise moment we make this decision (which perhaps corresponds to our birth), we put on the mask proper to the art, to its rituality and sacredness.
In this perspective the artist must be 'naked', become again a simple man, and bear witness to what we are and what we're going through with extreme modesty and endless humility.
The great Henry Miller once wrote: "I want to die as a city, in order to be reborn as an individual".
A possible meaning of this sentence is that we must go beyond the idea that all impulses are institutionalized and return to the original primordial instinct.
D.H. Lawrence had a similar intuition when he imagined that Jesus Christ would be reincarnated as an ordinary man after his resurrection. Again, it's a good example of how we need to shed the clothes of any kind of protagonist (whether it be for or against the status quo, whether to rebel or in reaction) and bare ourselves to the earth and the elements, and again faced with intellect and emotions.
There are states of mind and body that encourage this pure and dangerous flow, this undressing - states of drunkenness, or those of spiritual ecstasy, or great physical efforts, or sexual life with its ejaculatory cycles of birth death and resurrection, or the convulsions of ritual dances, or states of euphoria, joy or happiness, this kind of emotional hemorrhage, in which the primordial flow of sensations gushes fruitfully.
It's clear that we can't deprive ourselves of our skin, so to speak, but it's also true that we can moult and change our skin. We can reinvigorate our capacity for maintenance and dynamic renewal to endure more, adapting to the constant change of life.
In the face of creation, we shouldn't hide, we should expose ourselves. Fear is linked to death. We're taught modesty in order to self-mutilate. That's the end of the ever-changing flow of life.
But in the vital process of creation we should rather gratefully find the way of appeasement, serenity, pleasure and sacred enjoyment, always at hand, always postponed, and finally pull us out of the tenacious sludge that anchors us to the bottom, to give ourselves completely to the untamable suburbs of creative evolution.
